College campus --- classic years of youth

Text by Gu Weiying

I always believe that our alma mater colleges should occupy an important position in our hearts as they are the birthplace of our illusions, eagerness and innocent stubbornness, a place fostering dreams.

Nowadays there is a lot of building of campuses in Shanghai, and many universities have numerous modern structures erected equipped with advanced facilities. But the cultural environment is not to be cultivated by mere big-money injection. The popularity of those reverent institutions is attributable to their characteristic cultural atmosphere, history and accumulation. What makes a good university lies in not so much high-class facilities as in interesting buildings, people and past episodes. The years of college should be spent not only acquiring knowledge in order to secure a better future; in a lesser sense, it is a time for you to gain experiences of growing up worthy of cherishing for a lifetime; in a bigger sense, it is a time for you to develop sound outlooks on the world.

Good universities, like people, have personalities and character of their own. Some boast of unique cultural environments, for example, Beijing University and Qinghua University. Some, blessed with landscapes of a hill or the sea, attract people like parks, among them Wuhan University and Xiamen University. For the lack of such natural landscapes, there seems to be something missing in the campuses of Shanghai. But the numerous buildings --- hybrid of Western and Eastern styles --- dating back to the late Qing Dynasty spread in universities here have not been completely demolished during the urban changes. Though not the most beautiful in China, they have each of them some distinctive character unique to their own. Besides functioning as places to acquire knowledge, they are places for innocent youths.
